Jiu Jitsu Instruction at Age 46
If asked an age at which most individuals start their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction, over forty years old would not be the first response that most people would give. However, in my particular case I started my BJJ instruction at the age of 46.
I was very fortunate to find a school and instructor in Master Tom Dinklage that allowed me to achieve success in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission grappling that I could only dream of achieving.
Jiu Jitsu Instruction in Houston
Checking out martial arts schools in the Houston area, it became clearly evident to me that if I wanted superb, quality instruction I would train with Master Tom Dinklage at Precision Martial Arts in Katy, TX.
As a public school teacher, it was easy for me to determine which instructor had one of the key ingredients necessary for good instruction – PATIENCE!!!!!
The Key to Quality Jiu Jitsu Instruction is Patience
Master Tom has the unique ability that only a few instructors possess of practicing calm patience as a student in class attempts to perfect the physical and mental mechanics of a technique. Master Tom realizes that not all students learn at the same pace. He also recognizes that everyone has different learning styles and learning challenges. My learning challenge was being dyslexic. However, Master Tom was able to tailor my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction to overcome this challenge. His patience with my training was crucial to the success I would achieve over my years of BJJ instruction.
Another key element to the success of Tom’s instruction is his vast knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques enhanced by his ability to communicate that knowledge to students of all ages and natural abilities. It is one thing to know the content of your subject area and another to be able to effectively communicate that knowledge to students. Master Tom exhibits exemplary skill in communicating Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques with user friendly teaching techniques.
Through my years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission grappling instruction, I have been very fortunate to achieve a goal that I could only dream of as a kid – to be a national champion. In 2007, I was able to bring that dream to a reality as a NAGA National Champion. I would never have been able to achieve this dream without the dedicated instruction afforded to me by my coach – Master Tom Dinklage.
My experience goes a long way in showing that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction is rewarding and beneficial at any age.
