Preventing Injury in Jiu Jitsu Classes
In my many years of training in Jiu Jitsu classes, I have encountered potential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students who have a reluctance to train the sport for fear of injury. There is a mindset that because a significant number of BJJ submission techniques involve manipulation of a joint, that injury is inevitable. My experience is that injury is inevitable only if you believe that it will happen!!!!
Listen to Your Body in Jiu Jitsu Classes – PAIN? – NO TRAIN!!!!
Many of us in the over 40 age group grew up seeing a poster in a locker room or gym that said “NO PAIN NO GAIN”. The intent may have been to motivate the athlete to train hard but many times the end result was that if you did not train hard through pain you were a “wuss”. During my Jiu Jitsu classes I came to realize that pain was my body’s message to me that something was potentially wrong. Very simply stated “PAIN? – NO TRAIN”!!!!!!
TRAIN SMART – LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
Training smart is crucial to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner who wants to limit potential injuries. Listen to your body, know your physical limitations and become comfortable with them. In this testosterone laden sport, it is tough to sit out a technique or limit sparring due to pain or an injury because we might think others perceive this as a “weakness”. LET GO of that thinking and know that injury prevention requires a much smaller time frame for recovery than an actual injury.
WARM UP AND STRETCH PROPERLY before Jiu Jitsu Classes
Crucial to being proactive in limiting injuries during Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes is taking adequate time for stretching prior to class or competition. For the over 40 BJJ guy this is critical. It may mean showing up to class early and doing extra stretching and warm up activities. Also important but many times forgotten is to stretch again after class. A proper cool down is as important as a good warm up.
TRAIN BJJ INJURY FREE!!!!
Training BJJ is indeed safe and a physical activity not prone to injuries more so than any other sport. Train smart and you will train injury free and also enjoy your Jiu Jitsu classes much more.
