MANY PEOPLE HAVE KNOWLEDGE – MASTER AND DOCTORATE DEGREES – BJJ BLACK BELTS – BUT NOT ALL CAN DO SOMETHING THAT IS A GIFT – AND THAT IS TEACH!!
Although I am a BJJ Fanatic, teaching has been my profession for many, many good years. Next to training BJJ and submission grappling, it is my passion – my life. There is no other profession where you can truly touch the lives of so many individuals. When I started training with Professor Tom many years ago, it did not take me long to determine that he had a “gift”. His knowledge of BJJ techniques and grappling was self-evident, but the gift he possessed was his ability to communicate his vast knowledge of martial arts to his students – he knew how to TEACH!!!!!!
TRAINING BJJ WITH PROFESSOR TOM MADE ME A BETTER HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER.
I credit Professor Tom with making me a better high school teacher. I have been privileged to teach at some outstanding schools with highly motivated academically successful students. However, in every class there are always students who struggle with concepts and find the material challenging. When I began training, I found myself in a position I had never before experienced – I was not the best student – in fact – I was struggling to even be the “C” student!!!!! What made such a lasting impression on me was that Professor Tom did not simply ignore me and only spend his time with those individuals in class who were naturally gifted. He worked with me – encouraged me – challenging me to improve always being positive in his instruction. This made me rethink what I was doing in my classroom – was I giving my “less talented” students who found the class material difficult the attention and instruction they deserved????
PROFESSOR TOM AT PRECISION MARTIAL ARTS KNOWS HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE BJJ INSTRUCTION TO FIT THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF HIS STUDENTS.
If you have had a class or trained with Professor Tom, then you know he has a love for teaching. He has a sincere desire to share with his students the knowledge he has of BJJ. He knows how to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of an individual – and trust me – I needed a LOT of differentiated teaching!!!! However, it paid off when I would go to tournaments and finding myself doing well – discovering that my training had been harder than the actual tournament competition – and that my knowledge level was equal to and more often greater than my opponents. I have no clue as to my won/loss record or how many tournaments I competed in over the years – but what an adventure I lived. When I became a NAGA national champion in 2007 it was a kid’s dream come true for me – and I thank Professor Tom for believing in me and helping to make that dream come true.
Professor Tom is one of the most humble and non-confrontational people I have ever known. His relaxing, calm demeanor would contrast to my aggressive attack at all costs disposition – maybe that is why I got the nickname of “the badger”.
THANK YOU PROFESSOR TOM FOR 11 ADVENTUROUS REWARDING YEARS OF BJJ / GRAPPLING TRAINING.
The greatest “feel good” that I can have as a teacher is when a former student comes back after graduation and simply says THANK YOU to me!!!! Now that I have moved from Texas and from training at PMA and with Professor Tom – I wish to extend to him my sincerest THANKS for the time he spent as my sensei. I was truly lucky that day many years ago when I wandered into his school and said “sign me up for BJJ”!!!!!!!!!!!
