BULLY SURVIVAL – A TRUE STORY
JIU JITSU INSTRUCTION GREAT FOR ALL AGES!
A dozen years ago when I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction, the sport was in its infancy. The general public knew little about it. Classes consisted mostly of younger guys who may have had some other type of prior martial art training. Much has changed over the years in terms of the popularity of Jiu Jitsu instruction and the various people who train it.

People of all ages now train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. However, the most phenomenal growth has come in the area of youth participation. BJJ instruction provides good physical exercise for a generation glued to electronic “toys” and the internet. If a parent is searching for an activity that will develop strength, balance/coordination and agility in their child, they need look no further than a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class.

Jiu Jitsu instruction benefits are not limited to a physical aspect only. Training also helps the younger participant to develop a healthy self-esteem, confidence and respect for others. Jiu Jitsu instruction usually involves a class regimen that kids are expected to follow. This helps the child to develop specialized learning skills and discipline that can help them academically in their regular school classroom.
PRECISION MARTIAL ARTS YOUTH CLASSES HELP KIDS DEAL WITH BULLYS AT SCHOOL
Most public and private schools across the nation have adopted a zero tolerance for bullying of any kind. As a veteran school teacher, I was honored to work with my BJJ instructor, Master Tom Dinklage at Precision Martial Arts in developing a class curriculum aimed at giving kids the tools to deal with a potential bully. Training in how to deal with a bully has now become an integral part of youth classes at PMA.
ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO TALK AN ADULT IF THEY EXPERIENCE BULLYING AT SCHOOL
Key to this instruction is reinforcing to kids the need to first inform an adult (teacher, principal, parent, etc) if they are experiencing any type of bullying at school. Class instruction includes how to respond to both physical and verbal bullying. Role playing by instructors and class members are a valuable aide in teaching our students how to handle a bully.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in its beginning may not have been perceived as something youth would train. However in today’s world, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction has given kids an effective, proven method to help keep them healthy and safe.
On of the most traumatizing experiences that a young person can be subjected to is being victimized by a bully. On Thursday, April 7, 2011 Precision Martial Arts student Adrian Ayala was targeted by a bully. Adrian had just finished practicing a bully prevention drill that we practice in our kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program in Katy, TX. (Adrian had no idea that when he was practicing the bully drill that night that he would have to rely on it to defend himself later that day!)
THE BULLY WANTED TO FIGHT ADRIAN AND STEAL HIS SCOOTER
After class Adrian was riding his scooter outside of his house when a big kid who he did not recognized approached him. Suddenly and without provocation, the bully knocked Adrian off of his scooter and grabbed the scooter and started to leave with it. Shocked and angry that he was being mugged, Adrian blocked the bully from riding off on he scooter. The Bully grabbed Adrian in a crude headlock to try to begin beating him up. (The headlock FYI is the most common hold you will encounter in a real street fight and our student are taught early on how to deal with this situation).
THE BULLY PICKED ON THE WRONG KID THIS TIME!
Having no choice but to protect himself, Adrian threw the bully off of him using a simple Brazilian Jiu Jitsu technique. Just like we practiced in the bully drill earlier that night, as soon has the bully hit the ground he rolled to his belly to begin to stand back up. Adrian seized the opportunity to jump onto the bullys back and apply a choke hold.

The bully was quite surprised that a smaller kids was kicking his butt. This is probably not how he pictured this situation unfolding. Adrian heard the bully struggling to breathe and begin to pass out at which point he released pressure while still maintaining the hold. At this point, Adrian “negotiated” and asked if the bully was going to leave him alone. Still stubborn and not willing to give up the bully continued to struggle. Adrian applied the same hold again this time with a little extra squeeze to let him know that he meant business and “re-negotiated”. Realizing he was defeated, the bully gave up. Adrian jumped off of him , grabbed his scooter and ran home to tell his parents about what had happened. They went together to find the punk kid, but he was nowhere to be found.
When I asked him about it later, Adrian told me he was surprised how easy it was to beat the bigger bully. The techniques he drilled in class made it possible for him to protect himself against a bigger bully in a real life threatening situation.

TRAIN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU AND DEVELOP PHENOMENAL CORE STRENGTH.
You can dramatically improve your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training and performance by building solid core strength. Core strength refers to the muscles in the abdominal area or trunk of your body. A significant amount of the power we use in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and our daily activities is driven by our abdominal region. I did not realize until I trained with Professor Tom Dinklage at Precision Martial Arts how important building my core strength would be to the success I achieved in BJJ.
BENEFITS OF SOLID CORE STRENGTH FOR BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU
Other than a very fit and athletic look, good core strength enhances your stability and balance. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a sport that will tax your body to maintain stable control and balance to execute techniques efficiently and with minimal effort. Having good core strength also aids in injury prevention – especially to the spinal region and back. The lower back pain that I had experienced most of life seemed to disappear once I had achieved quality core strength. Another tremendous benefit is the development of core strength is speed enhancement for quick moves that are needed in training and competition. Without sufficient core strength hip movements which are so important to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are much more challenging to execute.
HOW TO ACHIEVE MAXIMUM CORE STRENGTH FOR BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training on its own will enhance your core strength through the natural movements associated with its many techniques. However, you will find that to reach your top BJJ game you will want to add exercises designed specifically for this purpose. Professor Tom had me doing more crunches than I could imagine possible. Working with a stability ball, repeated triangle choke extensions and medicine ball exercises all aided in the development of my abdominal muscles. For me, one of the best exercises Professor Tom had me do that would blast the lower abs and oblique area were “planks”. On my own time, I would use inversion boots and do as many sit ups as I could while hanging upside down.

Through my many years of training, I found that key to progress in my BJJ abilities and keeping my back and spine injury free was to develop awesome core strength. Professor Tom Dinklage and his staff of instructors at Precision Martial Arts have the knowledge and ability to bring you to maximum core strength performance. Just be willing to work up and sweat and know you can do those last ten crunches next time you are at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class!!!!!
